Why Changing Your Engine Oil is Important?
Regular oil changes keep your engine lubricated, reduce friction, and help prevent overheating. Neglecting oil changes can cause sludge build-up, reduce engine efficiency, and even lead to severe engine damage.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need
- New engine oil (check your car manual for the right type)
- New oil filter
- Oil filter wrench
- Socket wrench set
- Oil catch pan
- Funnel
- Rags or paper towels
- Car jack and jack stands (or ramps)
- Rubber gloves
Step-by-Step Guide to Change Your Car Engine Oil at Home
Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle
Park your car on a level surface and ensure the engine is cool. Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake. Use a jack and jack stands (or ramps) to lift the car safely.
Step 2: Drain the Old Oil
Locate the oil drain plug underneath your engine. Place the oil catch pan beneath it. Using a socket wrench, remove the drain plug and let the old oil flow out completely. Be cautious, as the oil may still be warm.
Step 3: Replace the Oil Filter
Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Before installing the new one, rub a bit of new oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter to ensure a proper seal. Screw in the new filter hand-tight.
Step 4: Add New Oil
Locate the oil filler cap on top of your engine and remove it. Insert a funnel and pour in the new oil slowly. Check your owner’s manual to determine how much oil your engine needs.
Step 5: Check Oil Level and Leaks
After pouring the oil, wait a minute and then use the dipstick to check the oil level. Add more oil if needed. Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then turn it off and check for any leaks.
Step 6: Dispose of Used Oil Responsibly
Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take it to an authorized recycling center or mechanic shop.
